5 Tips To Handle Your Oily Hair

by Colleen Sanders

Oily hair is a definite drag because it can make it appear as if your hair is dirty when, really, it isn't. This usually leads to people feeling the need to wash their hair more often, which can actually make it worse. Most of the time, the problem can be avoided without over washing by changing some of your daily habits. Here are five tips to help you get on the road to less oily hair:

  1. Don't Wash as Often: Obviously, the first step is to embrace not washing your hair so often. The reason is because when you are washing your hair often, you are removing the natural oils that are good for your hair from your scalp and it's going to overcompensate by producing more oils than it should. You can make a subtle change by washing every. other day instead of every day.
  2. Use Conditioner Only on the Ends: The next thing you need to do is only use conditioner on the ends of your hair and not actually on the scalp. When you do this, you are preventing the oils from the conditioner from building on the scalp.
  3. Use Dry Shampoo: If you ever feel the urge to wash your hair when you shouldn't, take out the dry shampoo. This is going to remove the excess oils that is making your hair look oily. This way, you have hair that looks as clean as it truly is, which is going to help you with the prolonging of washing your hair.
  4. Use the Right Products: Next, be sure that you are choosing all of the right products for doing all of this. Use only shampoos and conditioners that are made for dealing with oily hair and never products that claim they will make your hair shiny. The way that these products do this is by adding more oil treatments to it. You should also avoid using things, such as gel because it will buildup on your hair and create a more oily look.
  5. Don't Touch Your Hair: Finally, avoid touching your hair. This is a problem for many people and the reason it makes your hair appear more oily is because your fingers are naturally very oily. Only style your hair once a day and then don't touch your hair at all after that.
