Talking About Spas and Salons

A Microdermabrasion Facial Gives You Brighter And Clearer Skin

by Colleen Sanders

If your skin looks dull or it has sun spots, surface scars, wrinkles, or large pores, you may want to try a microdermabrasion facial. This facial can be done in a med spa or your dermatologist's office. Here's a look at how a microdermabrasion facial is done and the results you might expect.

A Microdermabrasion Facial Removes Dead Skin

This type of facial removes the dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. It takes away the surface layer of the skin, but the treatment isn't painful. You won't even need any numbing cream since the skin removal isn't deep like it might be with a chemical peel.

The facial can be given a few ways depending on the equipment the doctor uses. One type of equipment uses a hand-held device that streams crystals against your skin that exfoliates your skin while a vacuum pulls the crystals and dead skin cells back into the device. Another type of device has a diamond head on the end that the esthetician moves over your skin. It also has a hole in the middle that applies suction that lifts dead skin away as it's exfoliated.

Your med spa might give you a hydradermabrasion instead. Rather than crystals, this device uses a stream of water to exfoliate your skin. At the same time, serums are infused into your skin for an added effect.

Your Skin Is Cleaned First

The first step in getting a microdermabrasion facial is for the esthetician to clean your skin using products that match your skin type. After the facial is over, the esthetician will probably apply a moisturizer, sunscreen, and serums.

You should see results right away. You may need to have a few treatments spaced a few weeks apart to get the results you want, and then you might just go back occasionally for maintenance treatments. There's no downtime needed for recovery. However, you may be instructed to use certain skin care products and wear sunscreen while your skin is healing.

Results You May See

Since a microdermabrasion treatment removes dull and dead skin cells, you may notice your complexion looks brighter and that discolorations are gone so you have an even skin color and tone. There may be fewer wrinkles and fewer light scars on your face. Your pores may be smaller and your acne may look improved. Your skin might also glow thanks to the increased blood circulation after the treatment.

A microdermabrasion facial is usually tolerated well by all skin types, so if you like the results, you may want to add the treatment to your beauty routine to keep your skin looking bright and clear.
